Ubuntu Phone First Look - What to Expect

The day before yesterday brought an amazing news in the electronics and software market when Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu, the world's most popular Linux based OS announced its phone version. The first look of this OS shocked everyone as it was great in everything from design to proposed features. This post tells you for what you should wait for this brand new mobile OS.
Ubuntu for Phones

Speed

The primary thing that can be expected from Ubuntu for mobile phones can be speed. Ubuntu for PC is known for its speed advantage over other operating systems so can be expected from Ubuntu on phone. Mark said that the Linux kernel which is used for Android, will be used for Ubuntu as well.

Security

Security after speed can be called the most basic concentration an Ubuntu phone might have. Many professionals are expecting Ubuntu to be a more secure operating system than its contenders.

Design

The design, as proposed in the keynote and on the website by Ubuntu is stunningly interactive and beautiful. The tag line for Ubuntu for phones is "Ubuntu - The Human Touch", and so has the design. The 'welcome' screen shows updates about the phone and the user.

The app icons are very attractive already. The home screen has an app launcher similar to Ubuntu Unity UI's app launcher. Mark said that the concept behind the design is that the user will be able to use the four edges of the phone for regular tasks.

Cloud Integration

People at Canonical are already experts of cloud computing. Ubuntu Cloud is one of the most successful Linux cloud. With Ubuntu phone, they are promising everything on every device, and this surely indicates the better cloud integration Ubuntu phone will bring. Ubuntu One, is already a cloud storage service provided limited for free with Ubuntu OS.

More

A lot more features are announced to be in the Ubuntu phone. This keynote video by Mark Shuttleworth explains what they are.

Ubuntu has the same kernel as Android, so Mark says that many Android devices will be able to run Ubuntu. The minimum hardware requirements are:
  • 1GHz Cortex A9 processor
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 4 GB storage
  • Multi touch
Many phones support this configuration so you should be able to run Ubuntu beta on your phone soon. Ubuntu devices will be available in the late 2013 or early 2014 when Canonical gets their manufacturing partners to get the hardware done.
We are very much excited to review Ubuntu after its launch. Stay tuned for more updates. Do you think Ubuntu will be able to stand against the giant Android, iOS or Windows Phone? Do let us know your views about this. Thanks for reading.
